If our governments, international bodies and industry organizations were run by wise people with the focus on what is best for all humans and for the planet, this transition to a simpler life could be made without too much pain and suffering. It will certainly involve a long term phase out of fossil fuels, but will require a massive investment in solar, wind, nuclear breeders and other contributors to the energy grid. Fossil fuels will need to be phased out in an orderly way prioritizing the most critical needs (for example, a diesel generator at a hospital could be high on the priority list). City redesign, tax strategies, conservation, reuse, recycling, etc etc will all play significant roles. I believe that it could be done --- but meanwhile, idiot politicians are working to ban books and ban abortion instead of establishing a plan to accomplish this Great Transition and save the world. So, No, I am not optimistic.
